Bethany Mayer—mother, retailer, surfer—studies beach culture. In the early 2000s, she noticed a shift in the way surfers dressed. Once a fashion wasteland of ratty sweatshirts with duct tape accents, the community was starting to embrace the upgraded fabrics, high-performance technology and better design that apparel-makers were oering. Mayer took note.
Her 200-square-foot store, the Surf Bazaar, located in Montauk’s hipster-chic Surf Lodge, displays her eclectic seaside sensibilities.
